Visible Spectrum |
The human eye is sensitive to light from about 400 nanometers (blue) to about 750 nanometers (red). Any longer wavelengths are considered infrared. The sensitivity of Sony's NightShot mode allows photographers to capture up to 1000 nanometers (IR).
For more information, please see this excellent website (contains many IR galleries): InfraredDreams
The wonderful Sony DSC-f707 has the Nightshot Mode, which allows you to record images up to 10 feet away in total darkness (0 Lux) using infrared technology. Images shot in total darkness appear as monochrome images.
To learn more about NightShot checkout this great site: Visible vs. Near Infrared Imaging
The IR Longpass Filter is needed to cut the visible spectrum out, leaving the IR and near-IR wavelengths to pass. When the F707 is switch to NightShot mode and the IR Longpass Filter is present, some really cool pictures can result. I made my own filter using EdmundOptic's IR Longpass Filter material, which is much like plexi-glass in construction, allowing easy cutting.
If you have the cash, both Hoya, B+W and Heliopan make great professional-grade filters.
